Lets make a wood carrier! This is a great workshop to learn the reasons for and benefits of steaming wood, how to do it successfully and consistently. Learn how or refine your approach to hand tools and machines. This class also compliments a green woodworking chair making class, if your looking into a ladder back or Windsor chair class, you will benefit from taking this and if you already are familiar with green wood chair making techniques this will just be plain fun!
We start with making the bows. Depending on my materials situation at the time of the class we will split a section of the log to be edge jointed then bows will be sawn out from that. This keeps us in the desired time frame and reduces waste. Or if a log can not be had we will use sawn green lumber to get our bows. We’ll go over both options regardless of the method. Then shape the bows, make a copper rivet and steam bend them.
The second day we make the parts for the base assemble it and drill for the bow. This is basically post and rung joinery like in a ladder back chair. We’ll split the rungs out from an oak log and shape them on the shaving horse. This is great fun and the fundamental technique for making things round without a lath. A valuable technique that I have gone back to countless times. We will talk about drying and the kiln, how to make one and when to use it.
Day three we clean up the bow, make wedges to secure the bow legs into the base and assemble. This day will be an overflow day from the previous two.
I want to help people gain the knowledge to apply these skills which many come quite easily into their own creative endeavor.
