In this two-day workshop we will get acquainted with our hand tools. The jack plane and fore plane, wood planes adjusted with a simple wedge like the coffin plane and metal planes with mechanical adjustments. Learning how these tools need to be sharpened and set up is an invaluable skill. With this skill you can go to any plane or tool in most cases and tune it for results that will rival any power tool.
So now we have our tools “singing” we need the appropriate holdfast and bench fixtures that compliment the tools. We will make your own set of windings sticks to get the twist out of the rough stock and a bench hook for crosscut sawing, and a shooting board to square the ends. These are pre industrial age techniques that carried well into the 1950’s and beyond.
On the second day we will continue planning technique and practice making mortise and tenon joints with the tools you’ve made. Other tools incorporated are the mortise chisel and marking gauge.
