Ever want to make something that you need and would love to use everyday? You look forward to it with a bit of excitement knowing that when you get home its there waiting for you?
Come take a class. These skills are what you need to know when building your own seating furniture
We will talk about design, what you pick up here will give you the confidence to create your own pieces and can be applied to other furniture projects. As much or more consideration goes into developing the undercarriage of these types of stools than chairs. Chairs get real busy above deck where they need to be. With these guys the action is below deck, special attention is needed for shaping the seat so its comfortable and strong but a lot to consider with the undercarriage.
The seat is shaped with and adze inshave and travisher or an Arbor tech cutting wheel on an angle grinder followed by the hand tools. The legs are roughed out with the jointer, planer and table or band saw and cleaned up with hand planes and spoke shave. Most of the wood I supply is air dried or green. We will talk extensively about drying your own wood and making your own kiln.
You get to see how this process goes with only hand tools and with all power tools. The one we make is a mix of both with an emphasis on the tools you have and use. I will go into working from a slab and selecting the appropriate species of wood where to get it and what to do if you cant. Now days purchasing a slab is much easier than it use to be for some of us. It may be at a higher cost than buying only what you need but the reward of hand selecting your parts while in more of a tree form is a meaningful experience. The wood I have is common to the mid Atlantic region and is in slab form and 8/4 or 2″ thick boards for the seats and legs and 4/4 or 1″ boards for foot rest and rungs. And of course sawn lumber from your local mill is a great way to go.
You’ll leave with a finished product. 3 days $550 + materials $50 = $600 Click here to purchase this workshop Select “Local Pick Up” at Check Out! to avoid shipping fees.
